A good friend of mine Anne (+ link to her food blog) made my day with this awesome gift! One of my fave animators:

And to my surprise when I opened the book...

The Little People

Sneak peak for my friends album design! These illustrations will go on the cd! Had a lot of fun with these:

Using the their printer's shop's template, it'll look something like this:

In the middle of it carelessly forgot to save and... well you know how that goes. It froze and I lost all the work and had to redo it AGAIN! I have a sketch of the front cover:

So far the most time consuming part is completed. Now for the cover insert and back of the insert...

Watch it

My Nooka watch finally died. Never liked that watch any way. Around two years ago I thought it was cool of them to create a different way to tell time but really, there should never be a learning curve to tell time. I can't tell you how many people complimented that watch and how many times I had to explain how to tell the time. Even I had trouble with it. You'll never read the time as fast as a simple digital display. Screw you Nooka and your pretentious way of telling time. And I just had to get the white color. Now its worn with shades of grays, greens, yellows, and all kinds of grossness. A piece of the band also broke off and the display is scratched up. I'll admit I was pretty rough with it since its my daily beater... but still! It shouldn't fall apart after less than two years. They market their watch as "premiums" but its low quality materials. Don't buy it unless you want to look cool and waste more time figuring out what time it is. Not worth the $130 retail price. What features does it have?

- silly way of telling time
- low quality polyurethane band
- weak EL light
- form and NO function

And that's all! No extra features (stop watch, timer, alarm). Looking "cool" and unusual are the only things going for it.

- - - - -

My new replacement... the Casio G-Shock G-5600E-1DR! Based on the model that started it all in 1983...

This is the ultimate super practical watch! Why?? Oh I can't even contain myself! For the features that matter:

- it's shock resistant construction (duh!)
- bright EL light w/ auto light (hands free time in the dark!)
- super easy to read display
- scratch resistant mineral glass
- durable resin material
- power saving mode (turns off the display after 60-70 minutes of inactivity and darkness)
- it's solar powered w/ power monitor!
- the features I don't use (stop watch, timer, world time, alarm)

Its an excellent combination of form and function! It retails for $110. Google shopping's lowest price is $66. What a steal! Even if you lose it its easy to replace. If you're reading this and need a new watch or just want one, go get one and/or for a friend. You'll love it and they will too. It totally kicks Nooka's ass.

My aunt gave me my first G-Shock in 8th grade. My dumbass lost it. I don't know why I never got another one. I think I was just afraid to lose it again. I also had calculator watch but the band broke. Now I have a G-Shock again and I'm going to take really good care of it. I love G-Shocks. I love the design and how it's so over the top shock-proof with almost every detail thought out, so Japanese! Its like a watch you'd see in an anime that secretly transforms you into a super hero.

When I had my first G-Shock, I felt like no one else had it because they were so "ugly" and big, but I loved it. Only a few people had them and I thought they were cool hahaha. I remember this one girl had a baby blue Baby-G with a nylon strap--good taste I thought. We traded watches for a day a few times. I wonder what she's doing now.

Okay time to end this nerdy post about watches....

BTW check this hi-liter pink! Its like Krang jumped into Tron and turned into a watch!

It's done!

Finally finished the Sketch Night 2 flyer!

I tried experimenting with CMYK colors and overlaps to create the illusion of more colors but it all got way too busy. Simplified it because you know what they say, less is more. There was some criticism for the "S" at the top looking tribal-ish. Since I already inked it I'll probably revise it later on with straight lines instead of curves. So far it's done and I'm satisfied with it!

A little sneaky peaky on the draft so far! Not sure what to put in the background though. Hmmmm

WIP

Remember that last drawing I started at sketch night? Well I'm turning that random creation into the next Sketch Night flier! Here it is so far:

On the bottom I wanted the soda spill to spell out "Sketch Night." I think the edgy-aggressive lightning style above will contrast nicely with the organic spill of the bottom. Shit's going to be DOPE when I'm done!

BTW Christine Wang is away in Taiwan so she left me with her cat! It's so chill and sleeps all day like me!

Handsome little devil isn't he?

Chillin'

She's looking real fine sittin' righ' there yessiree! A very modest set up but I really love it! Less is more right? The only thing left are studio monitors but do I reaaalllly need em? Yeaahhhh of course I do! Been looking at the KRK Rokit series. Most likely the RP-6 plus the subwoofer to really get some low-end oomph.

The guy I bought it from says there's just a little scratch on the back but upon further inspection... fool dropped it right on the corner but this thing is built like a tank! I was considering the Korg PadKontrol, M-Audio TriggerFinger, and the current MPD32 version. As soon as I saw the MPD24 on craigslist I just had to jump on it!

What's going on in my personal life? Nothing! I've been really enjoying the single life for about 7-8 months now. My life is dramatically better. I'm doing what I want to do. Met a lot of cool and interesting people. Having more time focused on creating things. It's fun now and I'm sleeping normally too!

What's up ladies? I'm chillin.

I started a new freelance gig in December. Guess what? Designing toys. Not exactly what I wanted to do but you know what? Fuck it. It's experience that counts and who cares if it's not some huge major company. It's the same shit, different name right? Anyway I have to design this line of dolls for girls. From figures, clothes, branding, to package; the whole thing! Not even trippin' about this project. It's going to be a lot of fun to do especially knowing that it will get manufactured. Shweet.

Much to do...

Good Things

Sketch night was a great success! Our model was dope, the spot was dope, the music was dope, and most of all the people were dope! Huge turn out for a first night. Even had some heavy hitters from Marvel and DC show up! AWESOME!! I have a feeling its going to get BIG and we'll have to move it to a bigger venue. My only problems with Harlem Cafe is the terrible lack of ventilation or some kind of air circulation. It was hot and humid in there (batwing is no bueno). CAN'T WAIT for the next session. Until then, our weekly intimate meetings will have to hold me off.

Oh hay PICTURES courtesy of Rens.

Out of all the life drawings I did (15-20?), one was acceptable lol. Got to shake off that rust!

I also started this drawing off after the life drawing. Random but just going with the flow lol! Not finalized yet 'cause I'm still having fun with it. Update later with some gouache or acrylic!

Last, last Sunday I went to the Rose Bowl Flea Market. There's something satisfying about walking through all the vendors searching for treasure. Discovered some interesting pieces and I decided to add a little Cheez to it!

Definitely one of my all time favorite movies.

2011

It's a new year and it's about time I had a blog.

Tomorrow night is our very first Assembly Line Sketch Night. I had the honors of illustrating the flyer:

I haven't seen the cafe in person but from the photos on yelp, it's a killer spot! Plenty of room and lounge enough to chill. There's been lots of promotion so I hope the turn out is good!

On a personal note, I'm going to step my game up harder than ever. 2011 is going to be my year.

I'll be posting more stuff up soon!
